Versión musical de la clásica novela de James Hilton, adaptada a la Segunda Guerra Mundial y que resulta ser una película muy distinta a su antecesora de 1939. En su debut como director, Herbert Ross tenía en mente a actores como Richard Burton, Rex Harrison, Samantha Eggar y Elizabeth Taylor entre otros, para la dupla protagonista, pero tras las positivas críticas de Petula Clark en «El Valle del Arcoiris», se decidió por ella para el papel de Katherine Bridges. En el caso de Peter O’Toole, aceptó el rol de Arthur Chipping al saber que Terrence Rattigan fue el guionista.
